Polish Prime Minister does not rule out early elections

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has been facing increasing pressures following recent leakage of secretly recorded conversation between his interior minister and central bank president Marek Belka. Pressures have intensified after security forces raided the office of Wprost – the magazine that had first published the conversation. Outraged journalists accused the government of violating freedom of speech. Mr. Tusk denies that police filled a political order, but does not strictly oppose early elections, if the situation does not calm down. “It may happen that the only solution will be early elections, if the crisis in confidence is so deep,” he admitted. However, as a two thirds majority in the Sejm is necessary for calling early parliamentary elections and the opposition PiS party has prepared itself for regular elections at the end of the next year, soon stepping down of the cabinet has remained far from being certain. On the other hand, the stance of the PiS may change if the public pressure rises further and along with it also chances of the opposition to take over the government.
