Brittle consumer sentiment: more than the Budget?

This Wednesday’s release of the monthly Westpac-Melbourne Institute (W-MI) monthly measure of consumer sentiment follows a marked decline over recent weeks in the weekly Roy Morgan measure of Consumer Confidence. Most likely, Budget leaks have played some part in damping sentiment as news emerged of the various measures to restrain spending in the lead up to last Tuesday’s Budget. This decline in sentiment has emerged despite signs of tentative labour market improvement.
