Five days after the ouster of President Mohammad Morsi by mass protests demanding early presidential elections, with support from the army, the situation in Egypt remains in flux. The commander of Egypt’s armed forces, General Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi, announced in a televised address on 3 July the “temporary suspension” of the controversial 2012 constitution and appointment of the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC), Judge Adli Mansour, as interim president. The announcement was made in the presence (and presumably with the full support) of the Al Azhar Sheikh, the Coptic Pope Tawadros II, the deputy head of the Salafi Al Nour party, and opposition leader Mohammed El Baradei.
