Australia: Still close to full employment in November

November employment data was a bit weaker than expected, with the number of people employed falling by 6,300, although revisions to previous months partially offset this decline.
Seasonally adjusted

  • Employment decreased by 6,300 (0.1%) to 11,457,100.
  • Full-time employment decreased by 39,900 persons to 8,026,300 while part-time employment increased by 33,600 persons to 3,430,800.
  • The participation rate decreased 0.1pts to 65.5%.The unemployment rate increased by 0.1 pts to 5.3%.
  • Aggregate monthly hours worked decreased 11.3mn hours to 1,616.8mn hours.

Trends

  • Employment increased to 11,456,500.
  • Unemployment rate steady at 5.3%.
  • Participation rate steady at 65.6%.
  • Aggregate monthly hours worked decreased to 1,622.2mn hours.

State/territory level
Unemployment rate increased in the states of Victoria from 5.4% to 5.5%, Tasmania from 5.1% to 6.0% and Queensland from 5.7% to 5.8%. Declines from 5.3% to 5.3% in NSW and unchanged in all other states.
