Greece’s Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, told the German daily Bild Zeitung that his country does not need additional bailout support.
“We do not need a new, third aid programme,” Samaras told the paper in an interview published over the weekend. “We are reaching the goals of our current programme and it is showing results.”
According to the paper, Samaras said that he has no knowledge of Germany planning details of another bailout programme. Last week, a German media report suggested that the finance ministry is actively preparing what would be a third package of assistance.
At the same time, however, Samaras said that “there is a EU agreement” that allows for Greek debt relief should the country reach existing fiscal targets, such as a primary surplus.
Samaras cited the possibility of extending the maturity of current loans or lowering the interest rates attached to them as potential options, should the targets be met.
