Economy Watch – New Zealand’s Great Wall of Exports

This morning’s upbeat merchandise trade figures didn’t surprise us as much as they did the market. We thought there were good reasons to expect exports to pick up the pace. And so they did in October, in spades. This, along with steady growth in imports, was very positive regards GDP growth. And, on balance, the month’s data maintained a trend reduction in the trade deficit, which will help reduce the current account deficit. All very good indeed.
