Trade Hints of Deterioration Ahead

The headline figures in this morning’s June trade statistics were robust. It has been that way for a good while now. Strong export growth has reflected the bounty of the past primary sector production season and firm pricing while solid import growth has reflected strong domestic economic expansion. The annual trade surplus of $1,201m is among the biggest we have seen in the past 20 years. But the outlook is for deterioration.
